Clutter-Free Gift Ideas for Kids

Gifts that will actually get used. What is on your gift list?

Get ready, set… SHOP!

This time of year, it is easy to become consumed by the number of things on our to-do list, shopping list, and calendar. We feel like we must make all the memories and buy all the gifts so that Christmas doesn’t fall flat for those around us.

The good news is that’s not true! Filling our kids’ toy bins with more toys (that will be forgotten by next week) isn’t what this season is about at all! Permit yourself to do less. You might find that less is exactly what you and your family need during the chaos of the season.

A Minimalist Gift Guide for Kids

Are you looking for ways to keep the spirit of Christmas alive without bombarding your kids with too much stuff this holiday season? Taking a minimalist approach to gift-giving can transform the way you and your family experience the holiday altogether.   It is our responsibility to teach our children how to stay organized and calm despite the excitement of Christmas. Let’s say goodbye to post-Christmas clutter in the living room, our kid’s bedrooms, and overstimulated children.  With help from Meru Mentor as your personal life mentor, it’s easy to discover how less is more.

Here are a few practical gift ideas for your kids (that will actually get used!):

Staple Clothing Pieces – If your child is lacking wardrobe necessities, Christmas is a great time to grab a few things! Buy staple pieces with your lifestyle in mind. It’s common to want to fill our children’s closets with all the latest trends and cute outfits, but oftentimes it’s unnecessary because they outgrow everything really fast. What does your child need? A couple of pairs of shorts and pants, a few T-shirts, shoes, and undergarments. Use your laundry schedule as a measure to help yourself simplify. For example, if you wash it once a week, then plan to purchase enough clothing to cover the week and maybe an emergency if your kids are too young.

Minimal Toys – Too many toys can hinder a child from being able to enjoy their things. In addition, it can cause them to feel overwhelmed by a messy room. If you must purchase a toy, at least consider opting for toys that your child can grow with or open-ended toys for longer-lasting play. Here is a great list of open-ended toys to help keep your child’s imagination alive (without the extra clutter).

Experiences – Gifting experiences allow your child to create memories that will last a lifetime. Zoo passes, theme parks, painting classes, music lessons, or even skills courses (especially for older kids) are just a few of the many experiences you could give this Christmas. Of course, you have to keep in mind your family’s lifestyle, interests, and budget.  Considering the current world of technology, gifting your undivided attention to your kids as a parent is another amazing gift!

More to Christmas

Christmas is about so much more than giving and getting gifts. However, from an early age, we connect presents with the excitement of Christmas. Let’s teach our children to value what they have, appreciate those around them, and create memories that will last. Less clutter and more experiences!

Give the Gift of Less

As a holistic life mentor, Meru Mentor recognizes that the Christmas season is hectic and all-consuming. Remember to slow down and enjoy the little moments. You don’t have to get everything done, attend every party, or buy every gift. This season is much more enjoyable when you can prioritize what’s most important.
